In hosting terminology, VPS – or virtual Private Server – can be simply defined as an affordable way to experience the features of Dedicated Server hosting at a lesser cost. There are many advantages of using VPS server. If you are currently hosted on any of the Shared Hosting plans and are looking to upgrade your hosting, VPS is the way for you to go on. Let us try to shed some light on the advantages of VPS.

Dedicated Environment:- The VPS provides each user to experience a dedicated environment; this being the main advantage of VPS over the shared hosting plan. If you are one of those who have a low budget and looking to host your site in a Dedicated environment, VPS is the only recommended solution for you. You are free to do anything on your VPS unless your server resource usage doesn’t affect any other VPS user on the main node (the dedicated server on which multiple VPSs are setup). You can install any applications on your VPS (make sure that you check the minimum requirements for an application to be hosted).

Remote Access:- You are given the complete remote access for your VPS. You get full root SSH access (Linux VPS) or complete RDP access (Windows VPS) which can be accessed through the command line. This gives you the capability to manage your VPS even if you do not have any control panel like cPanel or Plesk installed on it. Here, it is to be noticed that you must have good knowledge of different commands used in command line. Hence, it is recommended to always get the control panel with your VPS, as it can play an important role of being a “pain-killer” for you when it comes to the VPS management or migration of your data from one host to other.

Guaranteed Resources:- VPS comes with the guaranteed resources like Guaranteed RAM, Disk Space and Bandwidth. You get the Guaranteed amount of RAM allocated to your VPS. Hence, the applications hosted on your VPS always get that much amount of RAM to use. You should always check the amount of RAM that an application may consume before installing it on VPS. If an application needs more or almost equal amount of RAM allocated to your VPS then you might experience VPS getting crashed frequently. Next is the disk space. You have guaranteed amount of space allocated for your VPS on the main physical server. This ensures you that there is no other user to use the space allocated to your VPS. Even the bandwidth allocated is guaranteed.

Burstable RAM:- Few hosting providers also give you Burstable RAM on VPS. If your VPS has reached the limit of allocated Guaranteed RAM, you can use an amount of RAM spike available to use at any point of time. However, burstable RAM cannot be always used. If your VPS guaranteed RAM usage exceeds or reaches the limit frequently then it is recommended for you to consider a Dedicated Server.

Control Panel Selection Privilege:- Unlike a Shared Hosting plan, you have the privilege to select your control panel. While being on shared hosting, you are not allowed to select the control panel. You instead have to use the control panel that is installed on the main node of shared hosting server. Whereas, on VPS, you have options available to select your control panel that you are most familiar with.

Hence, it is advantageous for Shared Hosting users to upgrade to VPS or any new user to start with VPS, if they want reliable and affordable hosting services with Dedicated environment.
